Barcelona have been crowned LaLiga champions for the second consecutive season after defeating rivals Real Madrid 2-0 in El Clásico on Sunday night.
The victory moved Hansi Flick’s side 14 points clear at the top of the table with only three matches remaining, officially confirming Barcelona as Spanish champions once again.
Goals from Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres in the opening stages proved enough for the Catalan giants on an emotional evening at Spotify Camp Nou. Flick was present on the touchline despite reports emerging shortly before kick-off announcing the death of his father.
The result marked only the second time in LaLiga history that a Clásico directly decided the league title. The only previous occurrence came in 1932 when a draw between the two sides handed Real Madrid the championship.
Barcelona’s latest triumph is their 29th LaLiga title, extending their dominance in Spanish football in recent years. After enduring a three-year wait for the trophy, the Blaugrana have now won the league three times in the last four seasons.
Since replacing Xavi Hernandez in 2024, Flick has enjoyed immediate domestic success, winning LaLiga in both of his seasons in charge. The German coach has now guided Barcelona to five trophies, including two Spanish Super Cups and last season’s Copa del Rey.
Barcelona also extended their impressive attacking record by scoring in a 55th consecutive match, the second-longest streak in club history behind the legendary 2012-13 side.
Despite their domestic dominance, European success has remained elusive under Flick. Barcelona suffered a Champions League semi-final defeat to Inter Milan last season before crashing out to Atletico Madrid in this year’s quarter-finals.
The title race saw several twists throughout the campaign. Barcelona initially trailed Real Madrid by five points earlier in the season before reclaiming top spot by December. Madrid briefly regained momentum after a strong winning run, but inconsistent results later in the campaign allowed Barcelona to build an unassailable lead.
Real Madrid’s struggles this season also mean Los Blancos will finish the campaign without a trophy for the second year running.
